With Arlen Specter’s defection to the Democratic party, the Democrats are within one vote of an ironclad 60 vote supermajority in the Senate. The Minnesota courts will hear arguments in June on whether Franken (who currently leads in the vote counting) should get the open Minnesota Senate seat. If they rule in his favor, then there is no obstacle to a one-sided agenda being steamrolled through the Senate. I am grateful that the Mothers Act is coming up for a vote in May, before the supermajority arrives. However, this bill has died many times and I fully expect that if we are successful in killing it this May, it will be resurrected when the supermajority exists. There are probably many bills that will be resurrected at that time.
I think checks and balances are important and I’m scared to see them disappear. The economic crisis has given the Democrats free reign to make decisions that we’ll have to live with for years to come. I don’t really consider myself partisan, but I am afraid of a supermajority by any party and I also am disturbed by the strong Democratic support of the psycho-pharmaceutical backed Mothers Act.
I’m praying the Federal government doesn’t get too big and controlling. I know God’s ultimately in control, though that doesn’t mean that mankind can’t create havoc on Earth. I’m also praying for some wisdom and discernment in our legislators, regardless of their party. We need more legislators to vote with an informed voice according to their conscience as opposed to blindly passing bills along party lines with little regard to the fallout.
Is a supermajority for the Democrats scary or a blessing? I’m interested in comments.

Based on what Harry Reid did last Summer I find this development absolutely horrifying. Thank goodness people are starting to wake up to the controversy given the corruption of those conducting psychiatric “studies” to market drugs. Because the argument that psychopharma cartel ads going out from the NIH and NIMH without delay will cause an increase in antidepressant drugging of pregnant and new mothers is really just such a radical wacko conspiracy theory and totally without merit. We need these ads because by removing the stigma, magically drugs become safe and PPD will go away.
Why even bother with the House and Senate? Just hold a press conference between the psychopharma lobbyists and the President and let them do a voice vote on the MOTHERS Act.
